What is website visitor identification?

Website visitor identification reveals the organisations behind your anonymous website traffic. For B2B, the useful unit is the company. Here's how it works, what's GDPR-friendly, and how to choose a tool.

In one sentence:

Website visitor identification is the practice of revealing which companies visit your website — by name, domain and the pages they view — turning anonymous traffic into named, actionable accounts.

The basics

How it works

A small script records each visit. Network signals (IP, ASN, reverse DNS) are mapped to an organisation, then enriched with public firmographics — industry, size, HQ. A confidence score tells you how sure the match is.

Company-level identification works without storing personal data, which is why it can be GDPR-friendly on a legitimate-interest basis.

Why it matters

From traffic to pipeline

Most B2B sites identify 0% of their traffic by name. Visitor identification turns that anonymous traffic into named accounts for ABM, outbound prioritisation and attribution — even when visitors never fill a form.

Company vs person

Company-level vs person-level identification

There are two flavours of visitor identification. Company-level resolves the organisation behind a visit (e.g. 'Acme GmbH') from network signals — company-level, no personal data, GDPR-friendly. Person-level attempts to name the individual via third-party identity graphs; it is mostly a US practice and raises clear privacy obligations in Europe.

Nalloo is deliberately company-level. For EU and global B2B, that's the defensible choice: you still get actionable intent — which accounts are interested and what they viewed — without handling PII or asking for consent.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Is website visitor identification the same as web analytics?

No. Analytics counts anonymous sessions and behaviour; visitor identification names the companies behind that traffic so sales and marketing can act on specific accounts.

How accurate is IP-to-company resolution?

It varies by traffic. Corporate networks resolve well; mobile and consumer ISPs less so. Nalloo attaches a confidence score to every match and only bills medium-or-higher results.

Is website visitor identification legal in the EU?

Company-level identification (company-level, no PII) is generally done on a legitimate-interest basis and doesn't require a consent banner. Person-level identification is treated differently. Not legal advice.

Does Nalloo identify individual people?

No. Nalloo identifies companies, not people. It never stores personally identifiable information.

Is Nalloo GDPR-compliant?

Yes. Nalloo identifies companies (not natural persons), stores no personal data; IP addresses are processed hashed, inside the EU. This page is informational and not legal advice.

How many companies will I see?

Typically 8–18% of B2B traffic depending on industry and market. Corporate networks resolve best; mobile and consumer ISPs less. Start free and see your own rate.
